Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Adoption Jumps 1500% in Two Months
— Version Fragmentation within Android Marketplace Remains –
Apple’s iOS continues to dominate the mobile landscape with the iPhone and iPad, as seen in our latest Mobile Manufacturer Market Share report. However, Google’s Android mobile operating system is garnering support and receiving a lot of attention, especially with the release of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, which was released this past July. Chitika Insights looked to measure the rate of adoption for the mobile platform since it began to roll out to a select number of devices.
To quantify this study, Chitika Insights compiled two months’ worth of Android Web traffic, sampling hundreds of millions of mobile ad impressions from within the Chitika Ad network. The Insights team then calculated and compared the percentage of traffic for the platform with overall Android traffic since June 30th, 2012. The graph below compares the percentage of users of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean relative to all Android Web traffic.
By the end of July, Android 4.1’s market share shot up to 0.87%, and only continued to grow, hitting a high point of 1.47% by the end of August. While a growth rate of nearly 1500% in slightly less than two months is impressive, the oft-mentioned fragmentation problem for Android remains decidedly unsolved. Google’s own stats point to more than 57% of Android users being on Gingerbread, a version of the Android OS released in late 2010. With Jelly Bean’s rollout to only a select set of devices, it’s unlikely that this version of Google’s operating system will generate adoption rates to put a dent in this ongoing issue – top of mind for mobile app and Web developers.
