Seems like Android lost share in the smartphone sector due to Windows Phone offensive on Nokias Lumia 800 launch + Kindle Fire launch marginalizing all Android tablets. Remarkable that iOS kept its share.
In 3-5y I see a unified iOS/MacOS at 40% on par with Windows. There is no chance for Windows countering the iOS offensive as MSFTs mobile platform is not attracting any users. With Apple introducing new iDevice categories above and below current iPad form factor there will be perfect solutions for each and every business. While as an IT manager you currently ‘won’t get fired for buying Windows’ the same already accounts for iOS/MacOS.
Andoid stuck below 5% and falling has certainly lost the OS game this year, as it lost the 2011 battle for the tablet. While in 2010 iOS killed the netbook, in 2011 it killed the Windows desktop PC (strategically). In 2012 Apple will kill the Windows notebook, coming as ‘Ultrabooks’. While the Ultrabook cannibalizes the standard Windows notebook, it has no feasible room between iPad and MacBook Air.
Via iCloud and common UI (graphically + voice/Siri), MacOS and iOS already harmonize, but will be further integrated so they have to be seen as one OS. With coming super-universal apps, running on the MacBook Air (soon on ARM processors?) as well as on iDevices, the unification will be perfect. The universal-app concept here is the true success story, not honoured by any tech journalist yet. Hugely different display form factors (from 3,5” 3:4 to 30″ 16:10) are more of a reality than ever before which cries for completely different UI presentations and workflows.
In 2013 I wanna buy/download an app once and run it on smartphone, tablet and notebook as well and of course it has to persist all data to the cloud. I don’t see this possibility on any other platform yet while for Apple it’s just around the corner. In 2013, 2y after Lion, this will certainly become true.
